Pic by Roman Glaser

just in case some of you can’t access the paper, here comes a bit which focuses more on bb:“Despite its role in nitrogen excretion, there are presently no data in the scientific literature demonstrating the healthy kidney will be damaged by the increased demands of protein consumed in quantities above the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Furthermore, real world examples support this contention since kidney problems are nonexistent in the bodybuilding community in which high-protein intake has been the norm for over half a century. Recently, Walser published comprehensive review on protein intake and renal function, which states: “it is clear that protein restriction does not prevent decline in renal function with age, and, in fact, is the major cause of that decline. A better way to prevent the decline would be to increase protein intake… there is no reason to restrict protein intake in healthy individuals in order to protect the kidney.â€ÂThe study by Poortmans and Dellalieux investigated bodybuilders and other welltrained athletes with high- and mediumprotein intake, respectively. The athletes underwent a 7-day nutrition record analysis as well as blood sample and urine collection to determine the potential renal consequences of a high protein intake. The data revealed that despite higher plasma concentration of uric acid and calcium, bodybuilders had renal clearances of creatinine, urea, and albumin that were within the normal range. To conclude, it appears, at least in the short term, that protein intake under 2.8 g/kg does not impair renal function in welltrained athletes.”

asked:“Do you have any information on correcting pH levels, I normally tell people to take in more carbs, never less after my second show I had bad acid reflux for some many months.â€ÂThis question leads me to believe that you are most concerned with the acid reflux that you are experiencing after doing a show. This is an issue of pain that is caused or worsened by stomach acid getting into the wrong space(the esophagus). I am guessing that you are under a lot of stress during the time preceding the show and this can cause an increase in stomach acid production. There are other things that it is important to rule out before concluding that this is GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). If you are having bad acid reflux then there are things that you can do to lower the pH of the stomach so that when it does “reflux” or move back into the esophagus, it will not burn so bad. The main cause of GERD or acid reflux is a weakened lower esophageal sphincter and not so much a pH problem. Although you are correct that the pH does contribute. Before suggesting a solution, I would like to know more about the cause of your acid reflux. This condition is sometimes confused with stomach ulcers which can be caused by stress as well. If you have ulcers then you will need to be treated by a doctor, because of the likely presence of a bacteria called H. Pylori in the stomach. To cure the ulcers they will give you a combo of meds to kill the bacteria and alter the pH of your stomach during healing. You may want to see a doctor anyways if it persists because of the damage that can be occuring. Lets assume that it is GERD aka acid reflux. My approach to dealing with this problem would start with lifestyle changes. What I mean by this is you may need to limit the following that may be causing or worsening your acid reflux. Some of the main causes include:Alcohol, Chocolate, Caffeine, Smoking, Carbonated Drinks, Fatty or Spicy foods, Onions, Mint, Citrus Fruits, Tomatoes and their by products. Some suggestions to reduce the chance of stomach acid refluxing back into the esophagus include:Eat smaller meals, avoid lying down after a meal, and you may even benefit from elevating your upper body with pillows while you sleep or Propping the head of your bed with blocks. This will keep gravity working to keep the acidic contents of the stomach out of the more basic and sensitive areas of the esophagus where you actually experience pain/burning. After following these therapeutic lifestyle changes as we call them you may not get the relief that you are after. In that case it is worth exploring pharmaceutical options for the treatment of your condition. If you have acid reflux 2 or less times per week then you doctor would likely reccommend an H2 antagonist like pepcid which is an over the counter medication that can be purchased without a prescription. If you have acid reflux greater than 2 X per week, then you may be more appropriately served by using a proton pump inhibitor(PPI) like prilosec OTC(also known as omeprazole). These medications work by reducing the acidity of your stomach to cause less burn upon acid reflux. You will want to speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medications because there is a chance of these drugs interacting with drugs that you may already be taking. For immeadiate relief you can always try rolaids which contain calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide which will neutralize the stomach acid. This is a good short term immeadiate fix, but your body may respond by producing even more stomach acid next time. Sorry about not giving you a precise answer, but I need more information and usually feel that it is best to discuss any persistent issues with your doctor in case they are something different than what we originally think. Hope this helps,Brandon

Julio Rodriguez hit 92 MPH tonight according to the gun (posted) at that stadium. His other FBs varied from 88-90. The question of his FB speed has been answered: he can hit 92 (or more?) but likes to vary his FB speed as part of his approach. He also threw one great change-up that the (Yankee’s) announcers praised. He also displayed a curve but didn’t have it under control, but you can see it is there. He seems like a guy who “knows how to pitch.” A couple of balls hit against him slid through the inf but despite that in 2 inns of work-including a walk or two-the hitters didn’t get many good swing and usually hit the ball on the ground.Despite two inns of men on base against him, he did bear down and nobody scored on his watch. J-Rod should eventually come on as a #3 or #4 in a rotation. ETA: 2013.Lisberto also pitched with much less success. Wild. Got hit hard by lefties.
